Saint Thomas Girl Chorister Course

July 24 - August 1, 2010

Highlights and Details of the Girl Chorister Course

Highlights of the Girls Course 2009

The fifth annual Girl Chorister Course in 2009 was considered by all to be a fantastic week in every way.  The girls seemed to have a magical connection from the start of the course and worked together beautifully throughout the course.  Sarah Baldock joined us for her first of a two year commitment with an engaging demeanor that drew the choir together in their quest for excellence. Congratulations, Girls!

Thursday evensong was a particular highlight with the premiere of Joel Martinson’s Here, a Light, the lovely gift of Mr. Forest Warren in honor of Margarete Peterson.

Looking forward to 2010

Next summer’s course will have many of the loved and familiar activities, traditions and events of previous years:

  • Sight-seeing trips – two this year
  • Broadway matinee
  • House Points
  • Leadership Girls
  • Bed-time teas
  • Pizza and Movie Party
  • Sports in Central Park
  • Chef Heidi cooking for us!

And, a few new things:

  • Dance Night (lessons during the week)
  • Opening Reception
  • More bedtime teas
  • Vocal and Organ Scholar

Details - Who Should Attend the Course?

An Enthusiastic Girl

Girls are required to participate in all facets of the course with joyful cooperation.  A superior choir is formed by those who work, play, sing, learn and live together, each recognizing the gifts brought by the others.

The Girl Who Loves to Sing

There are usually three hours of rehearsal each day in addition to repertoire class and vocal training.  Arriving prepared (knowing all the notes) is the start of a week of challenging work to live up to the musical standard set by the 91 year tradition of the Saint Thomas Choir School.

An Independent Girl

The Course has just one week to bring together girls from across the country and form them into a premiere ensemble.  This cannot take place if they are distracted by outside calls and visits. Girls travel with cell phones, but they are kept in a closet with the exception of one or two times when calls are permitted.

A Team Spirited Girl

Girls spend the week together in all that they do.  Not much ‘me’ time!  Each girl is assigned a ‘House’; a class group and a dormitory floor.  The schedule is constructed to provide all girls the chance to know and work with all the other girls.

Do you know a Girl Who Likes to Sing?

The rewards are more numerous than the demands,

as evidenced by a return rate of 70% from 2008 to 2009.

These are a few of the comments received from the girls, their directors, parents and others:

They all intend to return with others from the choir who have caught the fever.”

Music Director

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for all the wonderful work you have done once again.  (Our daughter) had a fantastic week with you and your staff and her fellow musicians.  You all deserve a round of applause for a job well done!”

Parents of a third year chorister

“A phenomenal music experience at St. Thomas.

We were so impressed with their singing, and so were our guests!”

Parent of a returning chorister

“I am grateful for the training I received in all areas, from each of the staff…

.extending far beyond music.”
